Pros & Cons For Those Final Weeks of Prep

PROS:

  • You’re lean AF and see muscles you never knew you had.
  • All your clothes fit 10x better OR they’re too loose which gives you a good reason to go on a shopping spree.
  • You feel confident physically both in and out of the gym.
  • Your insta pics look glorious and you get lots of compliments.
  • You get to enjoy the feeling of seeing all the hard work pay off.

CONS:

  • Your every day energy is extremely low or even non existent.
  • Your brain is in a constant fog and it becomes difficult to even put a sentence together.
  • Your cravings might be through the roof and temptations hit a whole new level.
  • You become a hermit crab because going out to socialize is too exhausting both physically and mentally.
  • In conjunction with the above, you have no social life IRL. You end up missing out on fun events and might develop FOMO which can distract you from your current goal.
  • Anxiety and stress over the little things tends to be much higher, even if you’re not typically an anxious person.
  • The only things you have time for in your schedule revolve around cardio, training, meal prep, counting macros, tanning steps, posing, and going to bed at a good time just to do it all over again the next day. You become completely consumed by it and there’s hardly enough time in the day for those things let alone to add anything fun in your schedule outside of prep related tasks.
  • Your relationships might suffer drastically if you aren’t aware of how selfish you’re being. Like it or not, this is an incredibly selfish sport.
  • Your bank account will take a hit. It’s extremely expensive to compete especially if you’re traveling for your show(s).

If you’re contemplating on getting into bodybuilding, OR even if you just enjoy watching others go through the process, you need to be aware of these factors.

I’m not trying to scare you but just make you aware of the reality of it all. If you only do it for the insta worthy pics that may make you seem like you have it all together, you’ll in reality hate your life. You have to have a bigger & better “why” than just “to look good”.

The pros I listed are in relevance only to the final weeks. There are obviously a lot more great reasons to do this sport. I just think that people who’ve never done it don’t truly understand what it takes until they’ve been through it themselves…they too often ignore the negatives and sacrifices that come with it. They assume the only sacrifices are food related, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In my opinion, giving up certain foods is the leasts difficult part.

While I don’t want people to get into it for the wrong reasons, I have a hard time discouraging someone from doing it even if their primary goal is to “look better naked” because that’s why I got into it and look where I am now. I had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I fell in love with the process and fitness lifestyle so much that I ended up making a career out of it. Each prep I’ve made mistakes and each time I’ve learned from them and grown from it.

My best advice to those thinking about doing a bodybuilding show is to do a TON of research before you dive in head first. Make sure you understand the financial costs, time commitment, different ways of dieting/coaching style options, and the risks involved. 

There is SO much more to this sport then the general population realizes and it’s vital that you educate yourself before making such a large decision that could impact your entire life.
